The difference ...Ilargi, I largely agree with you. The difference in a long term sense, however, is fairly great - India probably could be food self-sufficient for the forseeable future, if yields could come up the way they have in China (which, interestingly has had a steady trend towards smaller farms), whereas China could not on its present course. I think that does matter for the future.

Sharonjewishfarmerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17547121621115074866noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4921988708619968880.post-72708854866796062642008-05-02T09:09:00.000-04:002008-05-02T09:09:00.000-04:00sharon,While your point is valid, I think it's mor...sharon,

While your point is valid, I think it's more about the similarities than the differences, more the fact that food per sé is needed than what kind of food it happens to be.

When China says it would like as many Chinese as possible to move abroad, and I'm sure India would agree, I see Europe in the 16th century.

I posted this because it points to a facet of the Ilargihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09698428009501267664noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4921988708619968880.post-42168369654075128992008-05-02T08:41:00.000-04:002008-05-02T08:41:00.000-04:00The only caveat I'd make to this article is that p...The only caveat I'd make to this article is that putting China and India together ends up being a little misleading. China, as I understand it, has doubled meat consumption in the last decade, while India's has risen only by about 7%. Part of that, of course, is that India is poorer, but part of it is the vegetarian culture.

With the average Chinese person eating nearly 50kg of grainjewishfarmerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17547121621115074866noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4921988708619968880.post-79267736205711301062008-05-02T07:33:00.000-04:002008-05-02T07:33:00.000-04:00Just a small quibble - I thought the population of...Just a small quibble - I thought the population of Canada was 32 million?
